Also known as "First Mermaid", "Kyuu Mermaid" and "The Talking Mermaid", she is rumored to be the first girl who was turned into a mermaid. She appears for the first time to Shinobu in order to warn her to never call upon the mermaids again, stating that "the human heart is ever so fickle after all". When Shinobu disregards the warning, Q states that if Shinobu kills her, it'll all be over. Nanae reveals that Q's real name is Shouko Kuji and that she came up with the spell back when they were in high school. The two girls were friends until Nanae got a boyfriend, and Shouko's thoughts reflect that she wanted to stay like that with Nanae forever. According to Shouta, she disappeared one day after jumping into the school pool. After the final confrontation, Shinobu sets out to find out more about Shouko and discovers that she'd been the shrine maiden of the Kuon Jigahara shrine, which was dedicated to the mummy of a mermaid — whom she speculates is a foreigner that settled in the area, referred to as "Queen" by the villagers. According to the legend, she was granted legs when her wish of falling in mutual love with a human was fulfilled.
