Mei is first introduced among the group of students hiding inside the school during the shiritori trial. She is seemingly open and promiscuous, allowing Ushimitsu to grope her breasts and hinting Akashi to do the same. Mei grows to develop a more serious affection toward Akashi after seeing him perform in various trials despite Toroi's dedication toward her. Being a talented artist, Mei sketches headshots of friends as they die throughout the trials. She is an integral source of morale throughout the series, uplifting her friends spirits even in her rather blunt nature. Throughout her childhood Mei was in love with the concept of being in love. She would move on from one unrequited love to the next within days or even minutes until one day when her art teacher Tanimura confronted her about a scribble she made while bored in class. She initially thought she had found something to devote herself to other then love and grew to truly admire Tanimura before he revealed his lecherous nature and assaulted her. Classmates happened to walk in as Tanimura assaulted her and spread rumors about her making moves on teachers, in result she was bullied by her classmates to the point she stopped coming to school. She's one of the people who wins janken game against Sein Kami and becomes "Kami Jr.". Her valuable possession comes from her sketchbook. Thus, her tomfoolery allows her to materialize things she draws (this should be something she likes like a sketch of Akashi) for one hour. However, in Demon extermination trial, a surprise attack from enraged Kintaro's bear sent her flying enabling the bear to eat half of her upper body. Despite all that, her death was not in vain since her words before the surprised attack made Akashi realize how to activate his tomfoolery and defeat the bear.
