Originally named Rio, he was an orphan raised by his older brother and kept isolated from others because of his unique abilities. After Shiki Kijima killed his brother, he slaughtered several investigators in what became known as the Jail incident. He was eventually captured by Kijima, and subjected to extensive torture while imprisoned in Cochlea. He was among the prisoners freed from Cochlea during the Second Cochlea Raid. After the destruction of Aogiri, he joined fellow Cochlea escapee Roma Hoito.

Kenshiro's initial adversary in the series, Shin was Kenshiro's friend and rival, who was taught in the martial arts style of Nanto Seiken, specifically Nanto Koshuuken (南斗孤鷲拳) or "Lone Eagle Fist of the South Star", whose practitioners are able to pierce flesh with their bare fingers. Haine at first appears to be lecherous, but he helps Hiyo and her mother escape from a weird monster. He is in love with Hiyo and arranges their marriage, with her mother's approval. However, Hiyo's father claims that since Kurou's engagement with Hiyo is still standing it means that Haine's engagement is not legitimate. Haine is also able to cook really well.
